In Hidden America, we discover stories about the people who make our lives run every day—and yet, we rarely consider them. Among other places, the author spent weeks in an Ohio coal mine, on an Alaskan oil rig, in a Maine migrant labor camp, on a Texas beef ranch, in the air traffic control tower at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, at a California landfill, and in the cab of a long-haul truck in Iowa. By reading the stories of the lives of those who work in these and other places, we are reminded of our interdependence with our neighbors.
