What Are You Hungry For?

What are you seeking in life? “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness,” said Jesus, “for they will be filled.” (Matthew 5:6)

To “hunger and thirst” after something means much more than to just have a casual interest; it means to be focused, passionately and energetically, on striving after a goal. “Righteousness” in the Bible means essentially to be rightly related to God—to live in harmony with God, and to live in God’s ways. It is when we are hungering and thirsting after righteousness, says Jesus, that “we will be filled,” or it could be translated, “we will be satisfied.”

So if we are experiencing an emptiness in life, a lack of satisfaction, is it perhaps because we are not focused on the right goal? The only goal that is worthy in life is to focus ourselves on God and God’s purposes; and Jesus urges us to do so with zeal and commitment—to hunger and thirst after righteousness. It is then that we find fulfillment, as we share in the wondrous grace and blessing of God.
