Those We Are Not to Judge

At the recent General Conference of the United Methodist Church, a narrow majority of the delegates upheld church rules stating that “the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.” The traditionalists who voted that way typically claimed that they were following the Bible. But the few Biblical passages that speak on this subject have often been gravely misunderstood and distorted.

A prime example is an oft-quoted passage in Romans 1 that is commonly taken to be a condemnation of gay and lesbian sexual activity. In fact, what Paul strongly condemns in that early part of Romans is a self-righteous, judging attitude. He is clear that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”  (Romans 3:23) Therefore we are to pass judgment on no one.

As Jesus said, “Judge not, that you be not judged.” (Matthew 7:1)

We all stand equally in need of God’s grace. We can find that grace as together we look in faith to Jesus Christ.
