Rightly Explaining the Word of Truth

Paul in his letter to the Galatians put forth a list of fifteen sinful behaviors—fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing.”  (Galatians 5:19-21)

It is notable that 40% of the items in this list have to do with divisions and fighting—enmities, strife, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions.

Paul was concerned about many things, but apparently what concerned him most was the way that people could get caught up in fights! We see this in our government right now. We also see it at times in the church!

In contrast, Paul urges his readers to be open to the “fruits of the Spirit,” which are these—“love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”  (Galatians 5:22)

No matter what issues we face, may we let the Holy Spirit rule in our hearts!
