When I see small print, it is very blurry. But when I put on reading glasses, everything becomes clear! I find this to be a good image for what happens when we “put on Christ” (Romans 13:14). The picture becomes clear.
Blurred spiritual vision is a problem in every age. People struggle to see God’s truth and God’s call for human life. But Christ can “open the eyes of our hearts”. This is why the gospels report numerous stories of Jesus opening the eyes of the blind. It is not only because Jesus literally helped people with vision problems. It is a picture of how Christ in a yet greater way can bring us to spiritual vision.
In one healing story, a man comes to sight in stages. He moves from blindness to blurred vision to clear vision. Perhaps this is how it is for us — we move during our spiritual journey through stages of seeing more clearly. The key in the story is how the man progresses to clearer vision — through the touch of Christ! May we open ourselves to that touch today.
