The exhibit “Led the Way” by Ann Schierhorn, KSU professor emeritus of journalism, recognizes the sacrifices and perseverance of eight African American students who desegregated the Tallahassee, Fla., public schools during the civil rights movement. The students, who endured taunts, anger, and racism, went on to become lawyers, teachers, a doctor and a businessman. Schierhorn will speak about the students’ experiences at the exhibit.
The exhibit features photography by David LaBelle, former KSU photojournalism program director.
Ann Schierhorn is a professor emeritus of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kent State, where she taught reporting and editing for 30 years. Before moving to Kent, she was an editor on newspapers in Rochester, N.Y., and Iowa City, Iowa.
Ann and her husband, Carl, also a retired KSU journalism professor, met on the student newspaper at Northwestern University. They joined Kent United Methodist Church when they arrived in the city in 1985 with their 2-year-old daughter, Karen.
