Chapel Window 8—The Last Supper

Welcome to another Windows Wednesday! This week, we will be looking at Chapel Window 8, The Last Supper. In the top portion, we see God’s creation of the world exemplified by wind-tossed trees in a storm. The journey of Jesus continues with the Last Supper, a story recounted in all four gospels. We see Jesus surrounded by 12 His disciples, extending in His hand the cup and the bread, the night before his arrest and crucifixion. The lowest portion of the window shows the Holy Spirit at work in a modern service of Communion, celebrating Christ’s sacrifice and obeying his instructions “Do this in remembrance of me.” [Luke 22:19] Scroll over or click the photo below to see the artist’s original design for the window. You will notice, the original design had to be reversed to accommodate the position of the door.

“He said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.’ Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, ‘Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’ Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.'” Luke 22:15–20
