Chapel Window 4—Christ Among the Doctors

Today’s focus is Chapel Window 4—Christ Among the Doctors. In this window, the Father’s creation is celebrated with stars, representing Light. The story of Christ’s life is known by many names: “Christ Among the Doctors,” “The Finding in the Temple,” or “The Disputation.” It is from the book of Luke, and tells of the young child Jesus being left by Joseph and Mary in the Temple in Jerusalem at the age of twelve. This event is when Jesus asked the well-know question, “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” [Luke 2:49]

The composition of the scene is very traditional, as can be seen in this sketch by Rembrandt, the image of which was generously provided by the Cleveland Museum of Art (www.clevelandart.org). Jesus (in green) is gesticulating, surrounded by scholars (“doctor” being used in the traditional sense of “teacher”) arranged at various levels, intent on his teachings.
